I was introduced to Korean food about 3 years ago, and I’ve been in love ever since!  Norfolk Garden specializes in Korean cuisine, but it also has some Japanese cuisine (like sushi) as well.

If you are trying Korean food for the first time, get ready for a food extravaganza!  I would recommend trying bulgogi (thin cut beef seasoned in a soy sauce/sesame seed sauce) or galbi (seasoned short ribs) if this is your first time.

Not only will you get your main dish, you will get special Korean side dishes (called “banchan”).  Norfolk Garden usually has cabbage kimchi, cucumber kimchi, Korean potato salad, dried salted fish, fish cake strips, seasoned broccoli and sweet black beans.

For those who have a more adventurous spirit (or stomach), try bosaam (pictured above).  Bosaam consists of cooked cabbage, boiled strips of pork, salted shrimp paste, raw oysters and a spicy veggie mix.  You take a piece of cabbage, smear of shrimp paste, then add pork, oyster and some veggie.  Roll it up and enjoy!  Personally, I skipped the oyster because I wasn’t too sure if they were fresh or fresh from frozen.

The staff at Norfolk Garden are welcoming and attentive.  This is a regular lunch spot for me, so I definitely recommend trying it!

How does this place compare to Yechon? Every time I’m home and I catch a movie with my cousin Military Circle (cheapest movie tickets in the area btw) I’m always curious if its any good.

I think I’ve only been to Yechon once, so I’m not sure if I can draw a comparison accurately. I will say that the food is authentic and really yummy, so I would say definitely check it out if you’re curious.

There’s another Korean restaurant near Virginia Wesleyan, but the service at Norfolk Garden is way better in my opinion.
